Back on September
29, I posted the story of the Ohio couple who had been implanted with another
couple’s frozen embryo. Well, that story played out yesterday … and ended well,
very well, in fact.
At the St.
Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, the woman who had the wrong
embryo implanted by a fertility clinic has given birth to a healthy boy. Sean
and Carolyn Savage immediately handed the baby to his biological parents, Paul
and Shannon Morell, of Troy, Mich.
In a statement,
the Savages offered congratulations to the Morells. “At this time, we would
like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Morell family on the birth
of their son. We wish Paul, Shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy
the best, as they move forward with their lives together.”
The Savages
asked for privacy, saying, “Our family is going through a very difficult time. We
would like to thank people around the world for their support and prayers, and
the medical professionals for their care and treatment throughout the pregnancy
and delivery.”
The Savages said
both couples had unused frozen embryos at a fertility clinic outside Ohio,
which transferred the wrong frozen embryo back in February. Ten days after the
transfer, a doctor at the clinic called, saying Carolyn was pregnant with
someone else’s child. The Morells learned about the mistake a day later, and feared
that the other couple would choose abortion, ending the Morells’ chance to have
another child. They were relieved to learn that the Savages never considered
terminating the pregnancy or trying to fight for custody, and were willing to
go to term and hand over the baby without hesitation.
The 40-year-old
Carolyn said, “In the beginning, we just knew this was someone else’s child. We
didn't know who it was or if they didn't have children and this was their last
chance for a child.”
How wonderful
that this potential tragedy played out the way it did, with the two couples
behaving like true Old Souls, especially the Savages, who seem to have done
everything in their power to bring about a smooth transfer. And my heart goes
out to Carolyn, who is the real heroine of the story. Due to complications, she
can’t get pregnant again, so is planning to use a surrogate mother to bring
their remaining embryos to term.
On a final
note, we know that everything in our lives is planned carefully before we
incarnate. Amazing that the souls involved planned to have this wrinkle in
their lives.
What a story
the newborn will have to tell when he grows up!
