People often wonder why it takes loved ones so long to begin communicating with the Earth Plane after their crossing. The reason is that folk often find themselves in a disorienting ‘fog’ on arrival on the Soul Plane, until they can develop their ‘psychic senses.’ This applies even to experienced researchers such as Frederic Myers and Richard Hodgson, whom we’ve already met in previous posts.
In February, 1901, Sir Oliver Lodge had a sitting with medium Rosalie Thompson soon after Myers’ crossing. The latter managed to say, “Lodge, it is not as easy as I thought in my impatience.” He then admitted to being confused, saying that the Earth Plane was ‘a misty picture’ to him, and that he had memory difficulties. Nelly, the medium’s control, reassured Lodge that Myers regaining his full faculties would take time but that, of course, it would happen.
In fact, it took over two years (in Earth time) until September, 1903, and started slowly with automatic writing. He then became very prolific and creative, masterminding the art of cross-correspondences, whereby he’d break a message into three or four pieces and deliver each piece through a different medium. On its own, each piece made little or no sense, but once assembled, the meaning was clear. Cross-correspondences are important as absolute proof that the source of the message is an intelligent being on the Soul Plane, and not the product of the medium’s mind or ESP.
Imagine psychic #1 tells you, “Your deceased uncle asked me to tell you a letter will arrive tomorrow.” Then psychic #2 tells you, “Your deceased uncle asked me to tell you the letter contains a key.” Then psychic #3 tells you, “Your deceased uncle asked me to say to you ‘Grand Central Station.’” Well, the letter arrives, containing a key with a number on it. So you go to the station, find the locker and take out a briefcase, which to your delight contains bricks of $100 bills. Now that’s the stuff of cross-correspondences, and you know the psychics couldn’t have made up those messages – they could only have come from one source.
Dr. Richard Hodgson, the arch-skeptic hired to debunk Mrs. Piper and ended up being her most ardent supporter, showed up in one of her sittings on December 28, 1905, just 8 days after crossing at the age of 50, and, after some effort, managed to get her to write his name. At another sitting 10 days later, he said he was finding communicating and operating Piper’s body extremely difficult. However, by January 23, 1906, he’d mastered the art and was using her voice to talk to Professor William James and his wife.
George Pellew, who came through Leonora Piper three weeks after crossing at age 32 reported being limited in what he could do, and that he felt ‘dull’ in his new environs. However, he soon got the hang of being on the Soul Plane and later became Mrs. Piper’s control – not bad for someone who had major doubts about survival.
The prize, however, goes to Sir William Barrett, who crossed on May 26, 1925 aged 80 and by June 5, had contacted Mrs. Gladys Leonard. On July 26, Lady Barrett had her first sitting with Leonard, and her husband told her, “Life is far more wonderful than I can ever tell you, beyond anything I ever hoped for; it exceeds all my expectations.” Ten days is a very fast turnaround from Earth plane to Soul Plane … and to be so lucid.
The bottom line is that even if you know what to expect when you cross over, that’s no guarantee that you’ll hit the ground running on the Other Side. However, you’re off to a much better start than someone from the ‘Death is oblivion’ school, who may need a couple of centuries (in Earth years) to accept that: (1) he’s still very much alive, and (2) he can interact with the Earth Plane.
How quickly you ‘get going’ on the Soul Plane depends on your belief system and what you expect to happen. But it also depends on the fluidity of your consciousness. If you can go into a trance easily or meditate deeply, you’ll be in great shape on crossing over because you already have the tools you’ll need to communicate, manifest and travel around – the three main activities on the Soul Plane.
The best accounts of life and activities over there come from Monsignor Benson, who crossed over in 1914 and worked as a greeter until beginning to write a series of six fascinating books starting in 1947. Being a Catholic priest when he crossed, he cringed at the books and sermons he’d inflicted on the world, and two of the books are all about denouncing orthodox religion. The other four are the straight skinny about the afterlife. They are out of print, but I’ve resurrected them and now make them available as a PDF e-book that you can print out (see www.deathwithoutfear.com/benson_books.htm).
Living in Victorian England, Benson’s language is quaint and charming, at least to another Brit, and it’s the best information I’ve come across – at least until I get over there and can channel my own books back at ya. Until then, reckon I’ll just blog at ya!
Nice topic.Good informative on topic.
